When we were producing theatre in Chicago twenty years ago the actor driven 
ensembles such as Remains and Steppenwolf were the most vital forces in the 
community.  And it does seem that really vibrant theater scenes need to 
have proactive actors in the lead.

The showcase contract is something that actors in Philadelphia, San 
Francisco, Seattle could demand and receive from their peers.  But same as 
a vibrant theater scenes, it is not just something that will be handed over 
to them.
