RAT ATHE Conference CALLS FOR PLAYWRIGHTS

  All,

Below are two quite different calls for playwrights for the 2001
ATHE conference . The first is open to all.
The second SEEMS only to be open to " theater faculty and other
associated playwrights", though it is not totally clear to me.
Please feel free to forward, post and generally disseminate
whichever or both of the calls that seems most appropriate to you.

Those of you receiving this email who are either college professors,
heads of playwright service organizations, or literary agents, please
do me a favor and spread this information around to your
students/members/clients.

For further information, do not contact me, rather email the
contact person listed at the end of each call. If this email reaches
anyone multiple times, I apologize. I simply think it important for
conferences such as this one to cast as wide a net as possible.

I am not recommending nor dismissing the ATHE Conference by sending
this email- rather, I want artists to begin to control their
destinies. The first way for us to do that is through the sharing of
information, as knowledge is power. Do what thou wilt.

Best,

Brad Rothbart

CALL FOR SCRIPTS FOR THE Chicago, 2001 NEW PLAY DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

ATHE's Playwrights Program is seeking new, short plays for its twelfth
annual New Play Development Workshop at the ATHE Conference in Chicago,
August 2-5, 2001. Playwrights are invited to submit plays ranging in length
from 4-10 minutes (scripts over 10 minutes will not be accepted); there is
no restriction on subject matter, style, or intended audience. Six to seven
scripts will be selected by a jury of readers. Each playwright will be
assigned a
director, a dramaturg, and a group of actors; these creative teams will
work on the scripts throughout the four-day conference for an average of
two to three hours per day (attendance at the rest of the ATHE conference
is possible and encouraged). The Workshop will culminate in a public,
script-in-hand reading of the plays in a SHOWCASE OF SCRIPTS on Saturday
afternoon.

The New Play Development Workshop affords playwrights the opportunity to
work on their scripts with artists from all over the country who are
experienced in dealing with original material and to have their work
presented at the largest academic theatre conference in the world. In past
years, plays which have gone through this process have achieved a high rate
of success in securing subsequent productions and publication. Script
submissions should include four copies of the script, along with a cover
letter which indicates the playwright's willingness to attend ALL sessions
of the workshop, from Thursday morning, Aug. 2, through Sunday afternoon,
Aug. 5; the letter should also include the playwright's mailing address and
telephone/fax/e-mail numbers. Only one submission per playwright will be
accepted. Scripts not accompanied by self-addressed, stamped envelopes will
not be returned. To be considered, scripts must be RECEIVED by February 1,
2001; late entries will not be read.
Scripts should be sent to: David Crespy, University of Missouri-Columbia,
Dept. of Theatre, 129 Fine Arts Building, Columbia, MO 65211. For
additional information, contact David at (573) 882-0535, FAX (573)
884-4034, email: CrespyD@missouri.edu.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - PLAYWORKS 2001
The Playwriting Focus Group is accepting submissions of new plays for the
third annual PlayWorks Program to be held during the ATHE Conference in
Chicago, August 2-5, 2001. PlayWorks 2001 is a forum for exposure and
support of new work and a means to foster the artistic life of theatre
faculty and other associated playwrights. Two plays are selected each year
by jury, rehearsed by an experienced performance team, and then performed as
a staged reading and audience response event. These events have proved very
popular in the previous years. Submitted plays are to be final stage rather
than in-progress pieces, and may be full-length or one-acts of any style
which lends itself to an effective reading without technical enhancement.
Eligible playwrights must agree to attend the year 2001 conference at their
own expense. (Some support may be available to offset the conference
registration fee.)
* *** To submit a play, please send a packet which includes the following
materials: 2 bound copies of the script with the title/authors page
paperclipped to the top cover (author's name should not appear on the other
script pages); a SASP for acknowledging our receipt of the packet; a
business-size SASE for receiving the results of your entry; a letter
indicating the playwright's willingness to attend the year 2001 conference
and to be part of the PlayWorks 2001 rehearsal process. Unfortunately, we
will not be able to return scripts.
****Packets must be received no later than Wednesday, January 31, 2001, and
should be sent to:
