Re: RAT MATING CRIES: Which Night?

Hi, gang--

I'm new to the list. I've been reading the postings for about a week, but
am just now able to introduce myself. I "do" theatre in Dallas. I'm
involved in every way, onstage and off, most recently with a theatre company
called Our Endeavors. I also work with an organization called Young
Audiences, which works to bring the arts into schools. I look at it as
cultivating a future audience. Get 'em while they're young, I say.

What most interests me are performances that are essentially theatrical.
I'm less interested in work that could just as easily be done on film or
television. I won't go so far as to say that that kind of work shouldn't be
done. "There's room for everything," I say cheerfully through tight teeth.
But I see an awful lot of theatre that might as well be videotaped. I
exhort everyone listening to take utter, extreme advantage of the fact that
you are in a specific space, participating in several successive moments of
live interaction with an audience that cannot be duplicated (the moments or
the audience - forgive my dangling participle).

Sounds simple, but aren't we all a bit tired of watching what amounts to
ninety-minute, live sitcoms, or movies-of-the-week?

Thanks for allowing the mini-rat-rant.

Oh, and to the Independent Eye--

Come to Dallas! We'd love to see you here. Bring your show. I've got a
venue for you. This is for real, so respond if you're interested.

Donna
