Funny story. When I was just a snipper of a kipper, I was returning to
NYC after a brief stint in the midwest doing your typical dinner theatre
fare when I read an audition announcement in Backstage looking for a
singing actor to replace another actor in a piece called "Homeseekers". I
auditioned and won the role of Hector Diaz, a homeless kid who'd been
shuttled back and forth between several foster homes and, eventually
stabbed a guy and died by his own knife. Singing, of course.
After I got the role, the Director took me out for coffee and informed
me that I was replacing the young unknown actor named Richard Adan who,
three nights previously, had been at his waiter job in downtown Manhattan
and while trying to quiet an unruly customer was stabbed to death by the
guy. That customer was Jack Henry Abbott - a man who as a kid had been
shuttled back and forth between several foster homes and eventually ended
up in jail for stabbing a man. Then he wrote a book. Then he got out
(thank you, Norman Mailer) and stabbed a kid. Then he went back to jail.
The show went well, by the way.
