Re: RAT Unsolicited Scripts . . .
As usual Aileen, a well thought out response. One from the heart
filtered through the head and out into the cosmos. I'd be very curious to
see your productions one day. I certainly never meant to exclude actors
from the current depravity that I find permeating the american theatre. I
was simply adding on to John Sylvain's original post that the majority
of plays out there really stink. So do the majority of directors quoth I.
And I'm in complete agreement about the majority of actors stinking
horribly. Onstage and off.

It is the rarest of actors, indeed, or the safest (meaning a member of a
company who knows the social dynamics of all the players) who will run
the risk of being thought "hard to work with" by simply pointing out the
obvious to incompetent direction, writing, administration, whatever. In
our current theatrical structure the actor is in the weakest position.
Everybody has control over whether or not s/he works. It's a difficult
row to hoe. This, for me, goes back to the resulting lack of passion
inherent in most theatrical work today. There isn't the freedom to
express openly without risk of either offending someone and/or losing a
future job.
Responsibility for any

I agree. However, it has been my experience that 95% of the directors
currently working do not.
I tend to work with great actors and figure the audience

The audience of the theatre doesn't give a crap how people look if the
actor is emotionally connected to well-written material and responding to
strong direction.
I'm still curious how it is that no one seems to be responding to
John's original post stating the 90-some % of the plays out there are
bad. Are we mostly directors here?
Thanks for the debate, Aileen. I always learn something from you.
