RAT Re: obscurity
Karen,
Believe me, I feel yo pain. However, when you say
The theatre world treats
>the
>playwright as a child who can't get it right the first time.
I think you're kidding yourself. I've been in the theatre from the time I
was nine years old. That's almost forty years. I have found that "the
theatre world" (and by this I can only assume you mean the people who
inhabit said world) do all they can to support and respect the written
word. We all know that without the playwright we'd be mimes. Now there
are people within that world, most assuredly, who inflict their misguided
bile onto the playwright. Often they're directors who haven't a clue how
to wrestle a textual bear to the ground, on occassion they've been actors
who can't face up to the fact that their chops are gummy, and very often
one will find the playwright who thinks that writing is "channeling" or
"a gift from the gods" and would never deign to submit their baby to any
kind of rearing. (Editing) Truman Capote said: "Writing isn't writing,
it's re-writing." Nobody of any consequence or experience ever expects
anybody to get anything "right the first time". And if they do, I suggest
they leave the theatre to us toddling tots who like to fall down and not
blame ourselves for it.
Goo-goo,
Jonathan
