Re: RAT What the hell do critics know.

In a message dated 99-02-23 18:27:52 EST, you write:

<< "I have seen this play hundreds of times in rehearsal, from the beginning
to the end. I hae thought about this play a great deal. The reviewer, he
has only seen it once!" >>
As a critic...I say YEE HAW! This last couple of months I have seen a couple
of things and have thought..."wow, I wish I had been there during that
process." That's the greatest compliment. I went back and saw one a second
time, told my friends, and PAID! (Another of my greatest compliments). Of
course...as a director, I say "who the hell is that person to walk out midway
through...do they know the work we've done..." Blah, blah. Critic,
schmitic...the work others do isn't for me, and the work I do isn't for them.
SO ... the problem is that the critic's word is what frequently wins friends
and influences people. And I want people to see the work...I don't
necessarily care if they LIKE it, but I want them to see it. i'm rambling.
Three more days to opening of a play that has been produced much more than
three times, and I still think it is valid to produce it again. How can you
say if it's been produced more than three times it isn't worth...oh, that'll
set me on another rant, won't it. I sure like having you guys around as a
release. (my spouse just noted that hey also appreciates it that I spout to
you folks rather than to him.) :-)
