RAT Eye Radio Series on KPFA
Dear Friends-
A quick note for those in the SF Bay Area that The Independent
Eye's 13-week radio series, WEAVERS, will be broadcast on KPFA (94.1 FM,
throughout the greater Bay Area), starting Friday, August 3, 3 to 3:30 pm,
and at the same time for the 12 weeks thereafter.
WEAVERS is a series of audio portraits of people who in some way
"weave" multiple worlds together. A Chinese immigrant builds a community
center in an African-American neighborhood. A biology Ph.D. devotes his
life to documentation of poverty and homelessness. A woman's business
career is sidetracked as she's captured by her late mother's dream of a
neighborhood arts center. A restaurant owner reaches out across oceans,
inspired by her experience as a Vista volunteer in an Eskimo village.
In other interviews, a jazz d.j. describes growing up within a
family of schizophrenics. An internationally renowned city planner speaks
of his ignominious firing from his first job and his struggles in
transforming the face of a city. A woman remembers her childhood in the
only Irish family in an otherwise all-Black Detroit housing project.
The series includes artists, community organizers, a former welfare
mother who now owns a multi-million dollar business, the founder of a
church based on a science fiction novel, politicians, social activists -
many races, many classes, many callings. There's no "name" host, and the
people aren't plugging their new movie, book, or discussing their major
crimes. Just people who work day to day - without fanfare but with great
persistence - and make an impact. It offers vivid, engaging, inspiring
portraits of people you'll enjoy meeting.
If you know the Eye's theatrical work, well, this is documentary,
not fiction, but we bring to it the same love for people and a dramatic
sense of character. Of course, the people, being real, are a bit stranger
than fiction.
WEAVERS was produced in Philadelphia; this is its first West Coast
airing. If you like it, call KPFA and share your response. We're now in
the planning stage for a new series, and really hope WEAVERS lays the
groundwork for it. So please forward this message to any friends you think
might enjoy it.
Peace & joy-
