Re: RAT Theater as Art Form/Party/Parade vs. Theater as Small Business
I'm happy to make money from art, when that happens.
I don't want lack of money to stand between me and the
making of art, because I'd like art to be the way I am
with the world in addition to being what I do in it. I
don't want availability of money to confuse me about my
value or the value of my work.
I don't want money to mediate between presentation and
receception of what I do. The act of shelling out can
heighten an experience - but I'd rather have the
audience pay just about any other way than with money -
which is abstract and marked by a long history of
psycological torture. No, grants alone don't work, and
we can't always sidestep box office; non-violence
doesn't always work either, but we can spend more time
entertaining its possiblities. Money and violence are
treated like inevitabilities, which they almost are, but
not entirely.
Love and hate are heavily comodified; music is heavily
comodified. Love and hate and music also perpetuate
themselves (their forms, their effects, their laws,
their extremes) beyond or prior to the touch of the
market. Money is involved in my marriage and my
friendships and my church, but I can't say exactly that
pay to join. Can a theater (the company and the
company/audience contract) be organized more like garage
rock or a marriage? - in professional terms, versus raw-
emotional (an audence-spouse or audience-bass player is
different from a spouse or a bass player).
