RAT Moving Arts Playreading 4/10
Hi BCTers,
On Tuesday April 10, Moving Arts will present a reading of BUT CAN HE
DANCE?, a play by Los Angeles writer Dorinne Kondo, directed by Keith
Sellon-Wright and featuring Kurt Caceres, Rod Fox, Lacie Harmon, Kim
Montelibano, and Kipp Shiotani.
BUT CAN HE DANCE? is a multiracial, picaresque relationship comedy
chronicling the romantic adventures of Asian American Everywoman, SHE, in
her quest for love in the new millennium. At first dismayed by men who
stereotype her, SHE asks the burning question, "Can I at least find me a
man who can dance?" From hip hop to salsa to techno, SHE dances her way
through encounters with suitors of many races, musical tastes, and dancing
abilities. Along the way, SHE learns amusing and sometimes poignant truths
about love, sex, maturity, self-awareness...and the wonder of connecting
intimately with another person.
Dorinne Kondo's first play (DIS)GRACEFUL(L) CONDUCT won Mixed Blood
Theatre's "We Don't Need no Stinkin' Dramas" Playwriting Award.
Currently, she is a Scholar at the Getty Research Institute, working on a
new book about cross-racial and multiracial performance.
The reading of BUT CAN HE DANCE? will be held at 8:00 pm at Moving Arts'
mainstage at the Los Angeles Theatre Center, 514 South Spring St. in
downtown Los Angeles. There is ample parking in the gated lot at 6th and
Main, just behind the theatre.
Admission is free. Reservations are not required. A discussion will
follow the reading.
