RAT Next Rat Meeting and Fly By Night

Hi everyone,

We need more actors for Fly by Night. Some realized too late that it was
Passover weekend and dropped out. A couple writers offered to direct this
time around if needed. But if we get 3 or 4 more actors/directors, we'll
be in business.

The writers are Cat Hebert, Susan Triggiani, Brian Morrison, Dennis Moritz,
Alan Gerstle and David Usner.

Fly by Night been modeled after what friends have been doing in Los Angeles
and New York, where it has been a monthly ritual.

We'd like to see the same thing happen here in Philadelphia. It's not just
fun but a great exercise for actors, writers and directors. The pressure's
on even as it's off, since everyone knows you only had 24 hours to produce
the plays from scratch. Six world premiere plays!

The monthly Fly by Nights is also intended as a move towards the Rat
Conference in June, i.e., people meeting and working together for the first
time with a sense of mutual hospitality. Many of the people in this
month's Fly By Night were at the last Rat meeting at the Painted Bride.
The attempt is to discover who and what Rat is in Philadelphia.

The next rat meeting will be Tuesday, April 10, at 7pm at the Brick
Playhouse, 623 South Street.

One of the discussion points will be that a bus load of directors from
Lincoln Center's Directors Lab will be coming from New York one day to join
in the conference.

Both TCG and LCT are very interested in having an open gathering of some
kind where members of all 3 groups can engage in an exchange. One
suggested topic has been "The Director and the Community." Often directors
are "jobbed into" a city to direct a play. Can a director in such
circumstances really understand the community in which the work is being
presented? Is such an understanding even necessary? Perhaps it's the
directors' "outside eye" that has value. Etc. This could segue into the
actors' and playwrights' relationship to the community - topics that had
been proposed before.

Everyone in the Philly theater community is encouraged and welcome to join
in Fly by Night and Rat planning. In typical Rat fashion, the model is one
of abundance, not scarcity. There's room for everyone.
