Skip,

I usually don't bother to point it out when someone has shot themselves & their argument in the foot, but what the hell:  it's Sunday morning and I got time.
In one message you write:

6. One should probably only stand by words they can spell and use correctly
( as long as we're picking nits). it's 'Thier',  professor.

In another, you write:

( see my response to Professor
Hartman).

Come ON, man.  The word is THEIR and the name is HILLMAN.  Even Reporters/Reviewers/Critics are supposed to 'know their sources' right?

Okay.  One more thing that might add some interest and perspective here.  Check out the latest (I think it's the latest) issue of Harper's. David Foster Wallace has an interesting piece in there that may open a few eyes to the issues raised regarding usage, it's (to a degree) arbitrariness, the diferent camps involved, etc.  Worth a read, in my opinion.

Best,

Dan Dietz

P.S.--I do NOT claim to be a usage or spelling king, especially when it comes to email.  So if you have any nits to pick with the words and phrases which make up this email, mutter them to yourself in a dark room.
