Re: RAT, The dramaturgy of...

experimental can be a dull circle jerk. and a playpen for family funded
youth. isn't there really an enormous amount of talent in t.v. really. i mean
some of that writing. wow. they be so witty on frazier and the experimental
theatre wing of hbo gives us tah dah the SOPRANOS. how many times and ways
can you invent the wheel or the theater. after wave on wave pounds the shore
the last vestiges are just a puddle. didn't know beckett was a racist
bastard. heard it said that reports of joanne's production were misleading
and bating not accurate really and that's why sam pulled the show. prior to
the subway production mabou mines had carte-blanche to do what they would
with the beckett canon. and they did. permission from the great irishman
hisself. that's what i heard ruth and terry say about eight years ago, i
think. saw a great mercier/camiere at the public...

i think styles of theatre like the hallowed mass media arts derive from the
present day of culture. in the sixties you had the war, sex, drugs and all
that upheaval, what is now called experimental spoke to the time. apocalypse
now (then.) when so many are rich in america, weird ain't it, to be making
revolution. all the poor bastards and the dispossessed in the university of
america, do they go to coterie teadre and get a cure. and the political
agenda and the me now polotics that keeps the inner city schools poor...

there are enough ambiguities in university of america to keep any
obscuratist, ideologue or poet, mystified and writing for life. just like
always.

i guess it's not the style per se for me. but are you listening and looking
around.

love,
dennis
