I often come back to that idea I mentioned getting from Antonioni that
the work creates its audience, and I think the reason why it's a
premise that works for me as an artist is that there's many ways a work
can be "gotten." "Making sense" is just one of those ways, and I
often, wannabe Artaudian that I am, try to appeal to my audience via
means other than their intellect.
For me, theatre is a sensory/sensual medium (pardon my adjectival
indecision), and an audience can be led not just to think about what's
happening, but to feel it. Not just to understand what's happening but
to bond to it.
Now, I suppose there are some artists among us who don't care if the
audience "gets it" even on this level. But I think probably many of us
who are caught saying "fuck the audience" really mean to say "fuck
making sense, that's not the way I'm trying to reach you here."
