>DOUBLE EDGE THEATRE WINTER-SUMMER 2001
>PERFORMANCE AND TRAINING SCHEDULE:
>Double Edge Theatre's RELENTLESS
>DET/Staniewski Center's CONSORTIUM FOR THEATRE PRACTICES
>Staniewski Center's US TOUR of METAMORPHOSES
>
>Double Edge Theatre's RELENTLESS
>part one of ’ÄòThe Garden of Intimacy and Desire’Äô
>
>Double Edge Theatre has embarked on a new and original performance cycle,
>The Garden of Intimacy and Desire. The Garden Cycle’Äôs first piece,
>RELENTLESS, is conceived and directed by Stacy Klein and created with the
>Double Edge Performance Group. It is the story of a woman’Äôs search for
>independence- in the eyes of the society which surrounds her, in light of her
>own history and background, in relation to her partners, and in the intimacy
>of her own mirror. RELENTLESS calls upon the irrepressible human desire for
>invention and transformation.
>
>A departure from Double Edge’Äôs previous cycle, The Song Trilogy, RELENTLESS
>is drawn largely from the personal stories of its creators, and finds its
>universality through the common metaphors which bind all people. Research for
>the creation of RELENTLESS has encompassed both the male and female vision of
>women, gender roles, and the erotic. Sources have included Kafka’Äôs
>’ÄôJosephine and the Mouse Singer’Äô, Marquez’Äô Of Love and other Demons,
>Lorca’Äô s House of Bernarda Alba and the Prodigious Shoemaker’Äôs
>Wife,as well
>as his songs and poetry, Euripides’Äô Alcestis, Marguerite Duras’Äô The
>Ravishing of Lol Stein, The War, and The Man Standing in the Corridor, Anais
>Nin’Äô s Henry and June and Erotic Tales, Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz’Äô Poetry
>and LaRePuesta (the Answer), and the life stories of Queen Elizabeth I and
>Marie Antoinette. Throbbing through this historical research is the presence
>of Susan Smith, the Medea of our times, whose act of drowning her children in
>a Southern lake remains a heartbreaking enigma to this day.
>
>Through music, poetry, imagery and popular arts, which include circus,
>clowning, puppetry and dance (tango and flamenco), RELENTLESS will intimately
>and provocatively explore the contradictions of a woman’Äô s life in our
>society both sexually and emotionally, intellectually and imaginatively.
>Through this point of departure, the piece will address the questions
>confronting all people today: of our direction as a society, of violence in
>our schools, of repression in our lives, and of our ultimate hopes and
>yearnings for freedom.
>
>In keeping with Double Edge Theatre’Äôs practice of including the audience in
>the developmental process, RELENTLESS has been presented in three open
>rehearsals in various stages of its development- in May at a Double Edge
>gathering, in July as part of the Consortium for Theatre Practices, both of
>which took place on the Farm, and in September at the Network of Ensemble
>Theatres Festival, hosted by the Travelling Jewish Theater in San Francisco.
>Open rehearsals and previews will also take place in January and February on
