i ask this for the sake of clarification and my own
edification: what does "to frame the argument in
those terms is essentially a lie" mean? i really want
to know. these constitutional arguments are harder
than, to quote tom waits, "chinese algebra."
i'm so troubled by all that i'm seeing and
hearing--and yet encouraged: npr did a report
yesterday on how many african american votes were not
counted; my hope is that this will lead to a new
activism within the african american community and
others who are/have been marginalized. if gore is a
liar (and my absolute loathing of bush won't permit me
to cast gore in too bad a light), then perhaps
whatever's left of the left can find its way again and
a more worthy candidate can be found for
'04--regardless of who gets in this time. maybe this
will move us all to be more engaged in this struggle
once again. should it be the accursed bush, with the
supreme court up for grabs, we're going to have to be
much more vigilant. i'm old enough to remember the
positive shifts in the 50s, starting from madeline
murray o'hare's (i hope i've spelled all that right)
impact on getting prayer out of the schools, and the
civil rights battles in the south and so on. the
shift we've experienced ever so slowly toward the
right since the early 70s (easy to blame just
regan--who did tremendous damage--but nixon got the
ball rolling) has been appalling to watch; i hope this
all means it's really time to head back leftwards.
anyway, if i was the dramaturg to the current
political situation, i'd start advocating rewrites.
