RE: RAT Which Idea Now?
Hi all,
A lurker responds...
1. It must have a message, not necessarily a story, but a message. I
remember working on Annex Cooks, the production team and I were working
toward an atmosphere of community, a place where the audience felt as
comfortable as in their own dining room. I wanted to give them my view of
theatre metaphorically, an artistic home where we break our metaphysical
bread and sup from the flow of ideas and the passion behind them.
2. It must challenge both myself as an artist and my group of
co-conspirators. Projects which seem easy are often not new exploration but
just re-performances of paths already tread.
3. It must be hideously new and difficult within the frame of reference of
its production. In other words, the larger and more profligate the venue or
the more open minded and accepting the audience, the more I must stretch to
create something outside everyone's circle of comfort. That is not to say
that I believe that art should be created to shock, and I am not talking
about theatre intended to offend, but that art which may move us must - as
Brecht would agree - must engage our mental faculties at some level and
refuse us the simple pleasures of emotional connection.

Subject: RAT Which Idea Now?
Dear Rats-
So how about some informal input from the list?
So here you, the artist, are at one of those points that comes up
every so often when you wonder NOW WHAT DO I DO NEXT? you know you want to
create something and there are many options before you, books you have read
that might be adaptable, that idea you had last summer, the conversations
you overheard on the the bus, and so on. But which might you do next?
My question is this what sort of critera do you apply to these options to
come up with what you do next. What is worth your time, attention, and
resources? Let's face it, our days are numbered and we choose according to
some lights but what are they?
Perhaps to begin this conversation you might post what three things the
project must have for you to devote time to it.
