I just saw a cartoon in the New Yorker's political issue that this reminds
me of.

It's a girl talking to another girl.  She says "He said he was socially
liberal and fiscally conservative.  That means he sleeps around and is a
cheapskate."


It is true that the boxes that we put people in don't always (and not even
usually) contain all of that person.

Lyndon Larouche may have been a political maniac, but he was also a father,
a husband, and probably did give somebody a lift when he didn't have to or
went out of his way.

Anna Deavere Smith said something very good on NPR the other day.   (I'm
paraphrasing)  She's written a new book called Talk to Me.

The president doesn't have to represent everyone and he doesn't have to be
liked by everyone.  But he does have to somehow convene everyone together.

I don't like the convening skills of any of the presidential candidates.
That doesn't mean that some of the boxes that they are put into aren't good
or worthy boxes.
