I'm wondering whether one has to register for the conference (i.e., pay
money) in order to participate.

I've seen a couple of these athe presentations, Brad.  The plays tend
to be a bit on the conservative side, by your standards (and even
mine), selected, I believe, by folks who teach playwriting in
universities.  OTOH, if working a reading gets you into the conference
for free, it's probably worth it--interesting folks turn up there, like
Augusto Boal, Holly Hughes, Anna Deavere Smith, Paula Vogel, etc, etc,
etc, etc.  And hey: it's in Chicago!
