RE: RAT THE SUPERBOWL?

Looks like its time for the semi-annual. "I don't like what you are talking
about" debate.

I brought up the Superbowl Half time show because it was surreally
theatrical and highly symbolic. If Cthululu had taken over the mind of Julie
Taymor and the soul of Cirque Du Soleil it would have looked something like
the SuperBowl halftime show this year. Sorry if that is boring to you.
What's boring to me is talking about what we could be talking about rather
than talking about it.

I'll take forty pounds of joking emails and friendly updates sent across the
country between people who have learned to know each other through this list
serve and this conference before I'll take another ounce of people self
righteously deriding the level of this discourse without actually putting
forth a position which actually creates discussion.

Not that I have a choice as to what I give or take from this list...I mean I
do. And you do to. If you don't like something don't read it. Delete it.

That is to say: keep saying what you want to say. Good. I am glad to know
you because you are a theater person. I love theater people. (most of 'em)
If you want to talk about cool tv shows or Pokemon...go ahead.

Here's the deal. Some people use this list serve to reconnect. Some people
use this list serve to tell jokes to the like minded people that they have
met. Some people use this list serve to publish beautiful musings on the
nature of theater. Some people publizize their shows. Some people use this
list serve as a polititical soap box. Some people use this list serve to
complain that this list serve isn't being used properly.

Isn't that an extension of the community that each theater, each play,
creates? Do you do theater because you want to make theater better? Do you
do theater because you have a message to deliver? Do you do theater because
you love hanging out late at night after you've built the set drinking beers
with strangers you have come to love? Do you do theater because, for some
reason, you have to? Do you do theater because it changes your life? Do you
do theater because you're good at it? Do you do theater because its fun?

Go ahead and check all of the above. I do.

My advice: Calm down. Lighten up. Don't think RAT is something that it isn't
and you will begin to realize that what it actually is is better than what
you thought it was.

Maybe you do expect too much. Maybe you aren't paying attention. Maybe you
aren't making a difference yourself. Maybe this isn't for you. Maybe it is.
Maybe...maybe not.

So...what do you want out of IOWA?
