I worked as a literary intern from 1988-1989. My "fondest" memories center on
working as assistant dramaturg for Bill Buckley, who, not fully comprehending
the process of new play revision, spent the rehearsal process in Switzerland
skiing-- from whence he would send whimsical faxes to julie beckett crutcher
and myself with script changes on his earth-shattering, aesthetic-changing
adaptation of the spy novel "Stained Glass." My favorite bon mot involved
Bill heading off cheerily to the slopes (after an evening with a fine
bordeaux), only to realize he'd somehow forgotten his ski boots. Chuckles
were implied. I later lent copies of the faxes to the anarchist collective
Theater Oobleck in Chicago for their show dramatizing a showdown between the
plays of Vaclav Havel and Buckley. I can't remember the title now, but it can
never be as great as their first "The Slow and Painful Death of Sam Shepard"
(though "When Will the Rats Come to Chew Through Your Anus" comes close).
What's this about Cornerstone theater being a washout? I missed that thread
and I love them.
