RE: hey, what's new in RATdom?

You know I was about to send out something that acknowledged and thank the
RATs who responded to my Wellman query (Catherine and Barry, let's have lunch
sometime! If not NYC, maybe somewhere in middle like West Virginia). I don't
feel jumped on in the least. Hell, I write plays in Arkansas and send them out
to theaters on the coasts and a bad day on the RAT list is a pinic compared to
that process. Like many have said before, the conflict, arguing and
bitchslapping that sometimes occurs here is what makes this interesting and
often makes my work day tolerable.

I certainly don't and didn't mean to slight Wellman. Anybody who takes up this
takes is taking a path less chosen, and that's courageous enough. As a matter
of fact, I read an essay of his in an Actors Theatre of Lousiville newsletter
where Wellman said playwrights should dare to "write a bad play." That advice
made sense to me. Struggling to hit some phantom target of perfection is a
huge stumbling block. Writing a mess that might yield up theatrical moments
would seem to be preferable.

I do have one last question. Somebody spoke of the "intent" in the work of
Wellman. How much of the "intent" is coming from what Wellman has written and
how much is coming from the actors/directors?
