Re: hey, what's new in RATdom?
Werner, my friend-
Mea culpa, mea culpa, guilty as charged on Rudy (it's a hot button topic for
me, sorry to say).
As for Mac, I've seen a lot of his stuff, even performed in the En Garde Arts
production of his "Crowbar" way back in '90 when I first came to NYC. That
was my first exposure to his writing and I was intrigued, tho' a little
baffled. Since my subsequent education in alternative theatre in general
(Barry and Ralph and I go to A LOT of shows!) and Mac in particular, I have
come to most definitely admire his abilities as a wordsmith. Whether using
already-existing words, or making up new ones that you can 'get' in context,
he's got an amazing ability to create terrific stage ideas and images. That
being said, I haven't loved all of his plays, but some do stand out as among
my favorite theatre-going experiences, in particular his "Dracula" which was
done beautifully at Soho Rep a number of years ago. And, in NYC anyway (can't
speak for anywhere else), Mac attracts extremely talented performers and
directors for his work, which adds to the enjoyment. He's also a heck of a
nice guy.
As for Moving Arts, Valerie and the kids - I'll fight you for 'em (Hi, Lee)!

Actually, I've been meaning to post a followup to the smart-alecky response
below. It was quite good to read about that Mac Wellman piece and an actual
theater event as opposed to Mayor G., who might be quite a terror in NYC but
means next to nothing to this Arkansas Razorback (well he did show up here
for
a photo op/PR spin with our governor to counter Hillary's carptebagging ways
and it went over like lead cheese grits).
I wanted to talk about Wellman, who obviously has a lot of fans on this list
but leaves me cold. I saw a fine production of his "Murder of Crows" at the
Undermain in Dallas many years ago. Fine production but I walked out of there
shrugging my shoulders. Now I'm no expert on Wellman and don't know of his
latest pieces (funny, they don't play here a lot), but I'm wondering if the
RATs who like his stuff like it because it doesn't make sense or because they
can see sense in it or what. It seems clear that Wellman is quite popular
among a sizeable group and I'm curious as to why.
So there's a theatrical topic that can be picked over or ignored as the list
sees fit.
