LOS ANGELES RAT CONFERENCE 99 - BEACH BLANKET BINGO
July 22-25 (Thurs-Sunday)
LA RATS are scurrying around putting the event together. Here is some info.
Here are locations and tentative plan: events and discussions are able to be
changed and added to.
THURSDAY JULY 22
VENUE: THE IVY SUBSTATION (Home to Bottom's Dream)
9070 Venice Blvd. events inlcude meet and greet, "RAT- who we are and what
do we want" playwright workshop with Caridad Svich, playwright in residence
at the Mark Taper Forum. Playwright Suzanne Maynard, a RAT FEAST at The Ivy
Sub(pot luck brought to you by the Los Angeles Theatre Community) a reading
or performance of some kind around the feast, and ratsass beer and Sloppy
Joes( bar across the street where Bottom's Dream brings all their visiting
playwrights)until whenever.(The Ivy Substation is a historical building.
Built in 1907, renovated 5 years ago, it is a lovely 5,500 square foot space
with 75 foot ceiliings. adjacent to Media Park, easy free parking and Sloppy
Joes. ) more ideas welcome. the day will be filled with topics, discussion,
greetings, food and plays.
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY JULY 23 AND 24.
VENUE: THE LOS ANGELES THEATRE CENTER Downtown Los Angeles
514 Spring St. One of LA's theatre landmarks. 4 Theatres, rehearsal rooms,
big lobby, and all for RATS. Panel discussions include: Self Publishing-
what have we here. led by Douglas Messerli, Editor Sun and Moon Press, LA,
and others including Jason Neulander(Salvage Vanguard Press, Austin) Karl
Gadjusek(Big Sun),Encyclopedia of High Cheeze(Cunning cheap solutions to
theatrical notions)
"Got Milk"- Language in American Theatre today led by Los Angeles based
playwright Kelly Stuart (who is working with our brothers at Sledgehammer
Theatre in SD) and James Martin(Artistic Director, Bottom's Dream)
"Alternative doesn't have to mean disorganized" led by Lee Wochner, Moving
Arts, LA,
PERFORMANCE: PECULIAR WORKS PROJECT , NEW YORK, "Privileged and Confidential"
Internet simulcast live performance between LA and NY.
THE NIGHT OF 1,000 PLAYWRIGHTS, Bring lots of work to read in snippets we
want to cover the ground with playwrights' words,thousand of em. and then
ratsass. ratsass. ratsass.
SATURDAY: (LATC) Meet and greets, panel discussion: "alternative Non
Traditional Organization" (or something like that) led by Erik
Ehn(Playwright, ethicist) Ben Cameron( head of TCG), Lars Hansen(CEO, Theatre
LA) and Nick Fracaro, (Thieves Theatre, Brooklyn), Electronic RAT, the web
questions, National co productions,playwright Chris Jeffries, operetta
trends, Failures discussion,
Saturday Night we wnat to get you to LA Theatres and see our work.
PERFORMANCE: MOVING ARTS, Los Angeles@Los Angeles Theatre Center. staged
reading of "Lawyers" directed by Julie Briggs. ratsass. ratsass. ratsass.
SUNDAY JULY 25
SANTA MONICA: BEACH FEST WEST
Site specific conference. PERFORMANCE; THIEVES THEATRE (from Coney Island to
Santa Monica. about as far as you can go without drowning. site TBD. Beach
Blanket Bingo. Late afternoon CHILI COOKOFF. Arkansas vs. Circle X.
Conference Participants include)besides the above) YOU, CIRCLE X THEATRE,
ALISON NARVER, OASIS THEATRE COMAPANY(LA)THE ACTORS GANG, ZOO DISTRICT,
GABRIELE SCHAFER, SLEDGEHAMMER, ANNEX,GHOST ROAD,EST WEST,SACRED FOOLS,WERNER

conference will conclude at a cool house in Santa Monica for the chili cookoff
and sunset.
housing is free. please get us your requests. you'll have a lot more freedom
with a car. But we will arrange car pooling and mass transit info.
