Theatre Project (Baltimore America)

QUEER CAFE Œ99 -- 4 Plays that celebrate and reflect the lives of the
Gay and Lesbian Community.

PussyCat Productions and Theatre Project present a world premiere
extravaganza of one-act plays and music, performed live--without a net!
Queer Cafe Œ99 June 10-26, 1999. Theatre Project, 45 West Preston
Street, Baltimore. Performances are Thursday through Saturday at 8PM.
Tickets are $14 General Admission, $10 Students. For reservations call
(410) 752-8558. (TTY/VOICE (880) 735-2258) Queer Cafe Œ99 promises to
be an event; a spectacle--the likes of which have never before been seen
on a Baltimore stage!

As a follow-up to last yearıs outrageously successful Queer Cafe 2,
PUSSYCAT Theatre Companyıs Artistic Director, Susan Lev, presents Queer
Cafe Œ99 ; a carnival of new plays: "Too Much of Me" by James Magruder,
"Always the Bridesmaid" by PS Lorio, "Ten Memories of My Mother in the
Order I Think Of Them" by Charles Derry, and "The Jewish Nun" by
Madeleine Olnek. Queer Cafe 99 is a profound festival of extraordinary
human experiences, a celebration of the demented reality that is
everyday life--each short play relative to and highlighting the
spectacle of family.

PussyCat Theatre Companyıs Artistic Director, Susan Lev, directs all
four plays for this yearıs production. Susan was Artistic Director of
the Noe Street Theatre in San Francisco where she premiered many new
playwrights including Franz X. Kroetz. This marks Susanıs third year as
Producer and Director of the Queer Cafe, and she continues to fulfill
the promise of the PussyCat Theatre Company, ³to bring to Baltimore
audiences the freshest voices writing for the theatre today².

The Entrees
³Too Much of Me² by James Magruder is a bizarre exhibit of family
behavior, when a mother--the profanely evangelistic Georgette--drops in
for an unexpected visit with her son Vergil, and Dennis, his lover.

James Magruder has translated or adapted several works for the stage.
His translation of Marivauxıs "The Triumph of Love," and its subsequent
Broadway musical version, for which he wrote the libretto, both
premiered at Center Stage. His own produced plays include "Bonds and
Options," "Nesteggs for Armageddon," and "Penelope and the Sterile
Field."

³Always the Bridesmaid² by PS Lorio; a comical rant about the absurd
protocol of pre-wedding rituals and the struggle between a dyke and a
bridesmaid dress.

PS Lorio also composes the music to accompany this yearıs Queer Cafe.
Her original play ³Behind a Masquerade of Rhymes² which had twice
previously been produced, just closed a successful run at the Looking
Glass Theatre in NYC. Other recent productions include the full-length
plays ³...And the Scent of Tiger Lilies² and ³PLPD; a little insurance
never hurts².

³Ten Memories Of My Mother In The Order That I Think Of Them² by
Charles Derry is a vivid kaleidoscope of images and moments, taken from
a manıs recollection of his mother, and the many imprints she left on
his life.

Charles Derry recently published a ³fiction² version of ³Ten
Memories...² in the Fall issue of The Chattahoochee Review, whose
editors nominated it for a national Pushcart Prize. He is the
writer/director of Cerebral Accident, a 30-minute film which has played
in a variety of national film festivals. And his one-act comedy Joan
Crawford died for Your Sins was awarded by the Ohio Theatre Alliance at
the Cleveland Playhouse and premiered at the Reality Theatre in
Columbus, Ohio.

³The Jewish Nun² by Madeleine Olnek; a woman recalls her struggle for
balance as she tries to sift some truth out of her Judeo-Catholic
upbringing.

Madeleine Olnek is a NYC playwright/director with more than twenty
produced plays to her credit. Some of those titles include; Codependent
Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same, Disaster Area Nurse, The Destiny of
Mimi, and Double Awareness Double Awareness. Her play The
Iım-Not-Welcome-Anywhere Christmas Special was this yearıs winner of the
Robert Chesley Gay and Lesbian Playwrighting Award.
