Your schedule sounds like ours. :)
DECONSTRUCTING JULIE is our updated swing on the themes and language of MISS
JULIE with some major plot changes to explore a contemporary sexual (rather
than financial) classism. We're having a blast absolutely ripping MJ down to
it's bones and rebuilding the flesh and skin around politics and sex (two of
my favorite topics) at the Millenium.
Julie - a widow of a famous senator - is running to fill her dead husband's
office in a flashy campaign. On the eve of a major political rally where she
plans to speak out for closing down a homosexual dance club - she falls into
relations with an ex-student, Jean (also a dancer at a male strip club). The
arc is the same, the outcomes the same...but the language and plot have been
reconstructed.
It's the process that is really awesome...going through exploration of the
original text and arcs, themes, super objectives...and then saying "what if
we..." Exploration and experimentation all over the place. It's great fun
so far...
I'm happy to say that I'm in this one...but it's being directed by another
ensemble member, Charlie DelMarcelle...so I'm off the hook for awhile, and I
get to play, play, play!
