RAT Doomsday-Bloomsday

Once again I find myself agreeing with Johnny Sylain--
a completely reasonable predicament, though one should
always be careful not let it become a knee-jerk
reaction. Johnny’s heart is as wide and as soaring as
his rhetoric. Unfortunately a good heart and rhetoric
must still be coupled with a buck eighty-five to get
you so much as a single short latte these days.

But he’s right about the Year 2,000. Sometimes its
gravity can seem inexorable, like a black hole at the
center of our pop-cultural galaxy. Whether you’re
moronic enough to think that the impending date has
some intrinsic meaning, or insightful enough to
realize it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t, the tug of
its dark gravity is palpable.

But here’s a thought: maybe we can use this gravity,
like a slingshot, just like Voyager used Jupiter, or
like they seem to do in every other episode of STAR
TREK. Maybe the date’s own doom can hurtle us, happy
and hopeful, into the future. Like Johnny says, once
we’re on the other side we got nothing shorter than
another thousand years of history staring us blankly
in the face. Pretty fucking fabulous if you ask me.
