John, 

It is PRECISELY because of each & every one of your points that the
sardonic bricks are a flyin'.  And because the people pitching the
bricks are a bunch of bright theatre artists, who are KEENLY aware of
the hopelessness/complexity of the situation, many are responding with
the weapon they know best: a quick sardonic wit.  Admittedly, not the
the most effective solution, but sometimes it easier to quip, be flip &
laugh, rather than cry or bang one's head against the wall in
frustration.  Just my defense mechanism kicking in is all.
