BONANZA NO. 4
Printer's Devil Theatre to workshop 14 new projects over 12 weeks
Seattle: Today, Printer's Devil Theatre announced the line-up for the fourth
annual BONANZA. A different project will be presented every Monday and
Tuesday evening this spring at the Speakeasy Café Backroom beginning March
1, 1999 and closing May 18, 1999. Admission for the BONANZA is a
pay-what-you-want-as-you-leave donation.
Curated by Printer's Devil company members Deron Bos and Tricia Rodley, the
BONANZA is a forum for artists to experiment with their work with a
concentration on the process of generating theatre. The intent of the
BONANZA is to provide a creative environment free from critical and
financial pressure that allows artists to take their work one step further.
New artistic collaborations and the freedom to take risks shape these
projects and ultimately move them forward. The pieces are all at different
levels of development and are performed as readings, staged readings or
workshop productions. The audience is welcomed into this process through
immediate communication with the artists and their work. The BONANZA
encompasses the core of Printer's Devil's mission: it is a place for new
work to grow through collaboration of artists and audiences.
This year's BONANZA features work by four national playwrights and nine
Seattle playwrights including new work by Printer's Devil company member
Heidi Schreck and the work of several artists new to Printer's Devil, such
as Los Angeles Playwright Sheila Callaghan, Midgalia Cruz (1990 recipient of
National Endowment for the Arts fellowship), David Schulner (currently in
residence at the Playwright's Center in Minneapolis) and Seattle
choreographer Juliet Waller with a piece she describes as "her most
outrageous concoction of experimental dance theatre". It is also a place
where we can further our relationships with artists that have worked with us
in the past, such as Seattle playwright Aaron Thomas (whose play North
Street will open the 1999 season) and New York playwright Lawrence Krauser
(whose play Horrible Child opened the 1998 season).
"We've got an excellent roster of artists for this year as we
continue to develop our own work with writing from Heidi Schreck and Kip
Fagan, renew bonds with writers like Lawrence Krauser and John Klein who are
here for the 3rd year in a row, and bring a handful of new voices along -
among them nationally recognized playwright Midgalia Cruz," said Deron Bos.
Tricia Rodley added, "We do this for twelve weeks. It's like the iron man
triathlon, people coming from all over, sweating a lot. These relationships
and this kind of work is the bread and butter of us."
