A WORKSHOP!!!
GENERATIVE THEATER TECHNIQUES
[please forward this to folks who might be interested. Thanks]
Fringe Veterans theater simple (The Master & Margarita, Strindberg in Paris +
many others) is bringing up some teachers from San Francisco for a weekend
workshop based in Anne Bogart's Viewpoints and other generative theater
techniques March 27-28, 1999.
THE CLASS
Basically falls into the 'How To Make A Silk Purse out of a Sows Ear in 10
minutes or less with Air and Whatever is In the Room' category.
We will learn techniques for building a common working vocabulary with a
variety of exercises, including Viewpoints, ensemble-building, instant
character sketches and composition, plus as much as we can cram into the time
available.
This class is particularly well-suited for artist who look at adapting
existing works, or collaboratively generating new works.
note: there will also be a Master Class 10-3 on Friday for folks who are
already familiar with Viewpoints and Composition. By interview only.
THE TEACHERS:
Zoe Galvez just finished performing in the West Coast premiere of Sam
Shepard's newest at the Magic Theater In San Francisco, and Craig Neibauer
just completed an ensemble adaptation/deconstruction of Buchner's Woycek to
strong public and critical acclaim. Both have participated in SITI residencies
in SF.
Graduates of San Francisco State, they are core members of Ghostlight Theatre
out of Santa Cruz, and their ensemble-generated piece HUNTING FOR MOBY DICK
took the BEST OF THE FEST award at the Winnipeg Fringe, and then later had a
successful run at the Magic Theater.
An award-winning, internationally acclaimed company, theater simple was
founded in 1990 by idea-wielding actors, who aim to strip the theatrical
experience down to its elemental parts: the imagination of the actor and
audience, the playwright's words and the director's vision. We have built a
solid international reputation producing provocative, literate, subversive,
collaborative and original theatrical experiences.
We build from the imagination up.
WHEN
March 27 and 28 - 10am-5:30pm
CHEAP - $30 bucks for both days. (We are starving artists, too!)
WHERE:
Seattle, location TBA upon enrolling
note: The last time we had this workshop was two years ago, and we applied
many of these techniques right away to explore The Master & Margarita.
HOMEWORK:
Dress for movement.
Read The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen. And bring something musical -
not necessarily an instrument. (kids toys a plus)
