We shouldn't kid ourselves?  What should we do?  Throw up our hands,
shrug and blythely declare our ingnorance and incompetance?

Knowing the difference is our job.

And as for kidding ourselves, well, if you believe that's what we're
doing then maybe that's our job, too.
