I don't think you need to worry about soliciting an audience,
especially if your reading series is limited and regular.
In other words, you don't have to read a new play every week--
something that was tried at Annex years ago and something I believe
Circle X was doing recently-- but if a company committed to reading a
completely obscure play every month or two, you could make an "event"
out of it, at least for the company, if not the greater audience at
large.
Hell, serve food. That's a sure fire way to attract actors, and rats.
