Dear Allison,
I know this wasn't addressed to me but, well, I just can't help
spreading the truth around. The reason the company (as opposed to the
particular show) frightened the majority of members on the first seattle
fringe festival board was because the company's tactics were
"oh-so-scary". Yeah, right. Boo.
Having come from the radical sixties myself (I'm 45) and having
tasted my own blood more than a few times in prostest (or support) of
various causes, and having already logged over ten years in NYC before I
ever ventured into the realm of the frighteningly politically correct
pacific northwest, I personally found the company's guerilla tactics
more charming than threatening. And I loved the idea that this quaint,
little city that had been floating in its' own juices for far too long
suddenly had a company brave enough to shove shit in the face of the
status quo. Regardless of how radically "precious" I found the work
personally. A lot of people were shocked. Shocked, I tell you, shocked!
Well, it doesn't take much.
Now, most adults know how boards work. They vote and such. It was put
to a vote. Big surprise, an arts organization in seattle, washington
decided to play it safe. The company lost. But, the festival lost far
more in my view. Integrity. And me. Things it can never regain. This was
one of many stupid decisions made on the part of the first board of the
seattle fringe festival. And only one of the reasons I was proud leave.
Care to hear about new york fringe?
