Re: RAT Grad School
RATs,
I am the man who just finished doing 19 grad school auditions in 6 days.
However, I have not always been that man. I too have had my share of
Karma . Luck and Focus. Not to mention a big helping of whatever. : ) I
have been an original member of the Alchemical Theate in Seattle, cofounded
Mobility Junction: a Mixed Ability Dance Company in NYC, and worked with
the Living Theatre for 5 years, including two German Tours.
At the age of 31, I see three reasons to go to Grad School: 1) I'm tired
of having to have a day job in order to subsidize my existence. Theatre
will always be my life, now I'd like it to be my living as well. I cast no
aspersions on those who pull espresso or do childcare to make ends meet,
but I've been there and done that.
2) I'm a subversive at heart. I'd love to teach avant-garde, RAT influenced
stuff to impressionable college students.
3) I am a disabled actor. Now, there are not many firsts left, but I can't
think of a disabled actor who has been cast as anything other than their
disability (Geri Jewell, Marlee Maitlin, Christy Burke, Christopher
Knowles.) I'd like to be the first crossover -- the first one who gets cast
as an actor first. There are a lot of people waiting for someone to open
that door, and I'd bring 'em all with me.
That's all for now.
