***BETRAYAL, by Harold Pinter***
January 21 – February 20
A modern classic, Betrayal is passionate, sophisticated, touching,
humorous, and cruel. Pinter tells his story in an ingenious, thrilling
manner: The scenes work from present to past, going back through time:
Exposing details of an illicit romance and its effects on the lives of a
wife, a husband, and a best friend. Tantalizing questions of memory and
honesty surround this compelling drama.
The all-star cast includes Katherine Catmull (Raised in Captivity, and
the title character in PD’s The Duchess of Malfi), David Jones (The Food
Chain), Jim Elliot (O.T.) and Robert Fisher (Travels With My Aunt).
Costumes by Sylvia Tate (who also designed costumes for PD’s productions
of Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, and Einstein’s Daughter) Lights by Deborah
Haynes (Salivation) and Set by James R. Barker (As Bees in Honey Drown,
Down Along the Brazos). PD Artistic Director Robi Polgar directs.

p.m.
Tickets $12/$10 (students, seniors); Thursdays all tickets $5; Sunday

***THE SPEAKER SPEAKS, AN EVENING WITH SAM RAYBURN***, by Clay Nichols
January 31 – February 16
To some he was Mr. Speaker, to some Mr. Democrat, to many simply Mr.
Sam, but to all Sam Rayburn was one of the greatest statesmen in the
history of the U. S. Congress. The Speaker Speaks is a one-man show
written by Clay Nichols (O.T.), directed by PD Artistic Director Robi
Polgar and starring local radio and theatre personality David R. Jarrott
(Majic-FM; Dracula and Sherlock Holmes at PD).
In Nichols’ award-winning script, raconteur Rayburn guides the audience
from his humble beginnings on a turn-of-the-century cotton farm in North
Texas to the height of his power behind the Speaker’s rostrum. The
Speaker Speaks evokes memories of this century’s great men and trying
times with a clever mixture of flashbacks, peppery rustic wit and
southern fried storytelling.
Sundays 2:00 p.m.; Monday and Tuesdays 7:00 p.m.
Tickets $12/$10 (students, seniors)
+Audience TalkBack: Sunday February 14, following the matinee
performance. Dave J. regales with tales of his ship-to-shore
conversation with LBJ; make Nichols pay for his subversive political
beliefs!
***UNBEATABLE SPECIAL OFFER***
If you’ve never been to PD bring a copy of this email to either Betrayal
or Speaker Speaks and we’ll give you a free ticket! (Go ahead. We trust
you. But … (you knew there was a catch, huh?) Only one freebie per email
addressee, pleeeze. Not valid for Betrayal 1/22 or 1/23, sorry. Please
make reservations at least 24 hours in advance, and BRING PAGE 1 OF THIS
EMAIL WITH YOU FOR CONFIRMATION!)
***PD 28-HOUR ACTATHON***
Help Support The Public Domain Theatre Company and Venue
Starting at 8pm on Friday, March 19, 1999 and running for 28 hours
non-stop until midnight on Saturday, March 20 is the 1st Public Domain
Act-a-thon. The aim of this marathon of theatrical fervor is twofold: to
raise money for the Public Domain Theatre Company and Venue; & to boldly
go where no other theater company dares to go. The Act-a-thon will not
only financially bolster one of Austin’s most precious theatrical assets
but present to all and sundry a range of performances never before seen
in one place in such a short time – puppet shows, Refraction Arts
Project’s The Woman in the Window, by Cyndi Williams, music, staged
readings, youth theater, late night Jazz, radio plays LIVE on stage,
experimental theatre, butoh, spoken mime, underwater orchestras, old men
in their underwear, you name it we'll have it. And entry to the theatre
throughout the Act-a-thon, with some minor exceptions, is FREE!!!
“How can I help?” I hear you ask. Well, there are countless ways in
which you can actively become a part of or further the goals of Austin
Theater History. Prior to and during the Act-a-thon we need:
Sponsorship gatherers
Organisers - marketing, scheduling & support - pre, post and during
Performances - from 5 minutes to one hour long, of any style or genre
(sign up at PD!)
Stage managers and assistants
Door watchers
Refreshment Sellers
Street Barkers and Spruikers (ask Martin what this is!)
Sandwich Boarders
Audience members
Imaginative, devil may care, theatrical Wizzes
AND SPONSORS!
“How can I sponsor this earth-shaking event?” Glad you asked: Simply
sign up on a sponsorship sheet at the theatre (or send us an email).
You agree to contribute a $ amount for every hour of the Act-a-thon,
then we collect. For example, if you sponsor the theatre for a quarter
(yes, we’ll take that quarter!) per hour you'd be helping us to the tune
of … quick math … ummm… that's 25 cents x 28 hours … okay: $7. That's
right, a measly 7 buckeroos. (And it's Tax Deductible. Don't you just
LURV the system!) Course, if you want to you can pledge more. You can
pledge twice that amount, or thrice, or, what's 4 times? Quince?
Whatever you can give, in dollar terms or in-kind support, is always
gratefully accepted
Don't be shy, help theater and help yourself to a BETTER, more
FULFILLING life. It's not about money, it's not about ego, it's about
ART! (Well, maybe it's a little bit about money. And ego. But it’s gonna
be a good time.)
For more information talk to Martin Blacker (artyzen@aol.com)
8:00 p.m. Friday, March 19 until Midnight Saturday, March 20
Free: But we’ll be taking donations (as many as can fit in a pillowcase)
***CALL FOR SUBMISSION OF REVIEWS FOR THE ACT-A-THON***
We need your theatre reviews for the PD Act-a-thon: Submit your favorite
(i.e., worst) review from your under-appreciated theatrical career and a
celebrity guest will read it aloud to the masses. Did Polgar pan your
thespian travails: Humiliate him by reading said revue TO HIS FACE. Same
applies to reviews by all those other note-taking curators of criticism.
We’ve got some gems: So do you. Let us air YOUR dirty laundry with a
live staged reading of your fave review!!! (“Producing a play is a lot
like making a pizza …” NEED WE SAY MORE?)
