WASHINGTON, September 11, 2001 - The American Red Cross is standing by to
rush tens of thousands of blood products and is dispatching hundreds of
trained disaster personnel to New York City and Washington D.C. in the wake
of today's attacks. The American Red Cross Disaster Operations Center in
Falls Church, Virginia is on national alert and is closely coordinating with
federal, state and local agencies. The American Red Cross is ready to send
over 50,000 units of blood into the affected areas as needed. Blood donors
who have scheduled appointments are encouraged to make their donations,
especially in the weeks ahead. The Red Cross is not, at this time, calling
for emergency blood donations. News media will be notified if that is
necessary.
"The American Red Cross is doing everything we can to ensure the immediate
availability of the safest possible blood," said Dr. Bernadine Healy,
president and CEO of the American Red Cross. "We are also dispatching
hundreds of trained disaster workers and mental health counselors to New
York, Washington D.C. and elsewhere," she added.
Through its national system, the American Red Cross can quickly ship blood
products and mobilize disaster relief operations nationwide. "When blood is
needed, it must be available," Dr. Healy said.
The American Red Cross has activated its Aviation Incident Response (AIR)
Team to respond in New York City, and trained disaster workers from the
American Red Cross of Greater New York and the National Capitol Chapter in
Washington, D.C. are already providing relief in the affected areas to
victims, family members and emergency services personnel.

president and CEO of the American Red Cross.
