I found it, just as the email describes. It does LOOK suspicious, but it's 
listed as a 44kb application. that's either one hell of a worm or  some kind 
of download.

No, you can't transmit a virus by email alone- but, viri can be encoded into 
java and html commands ( your machine sees them but you can't unless they're 
written that way...) The means are there, and there have been too many major 
security breaches not to take this seriously.

I'm going to make a backup of it just in case, though, so I can reinstall it 
if it turns out to be something important...
