SEVEN DEVILS PLAYWRIGHTS CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES INAUGURAL SEASON IN MCCALL, IDAHO

McCall, ID …Professional playwrights, directors and actors from around the country will make their way to the town of McCall, Idaho for the first Seven Devils Playwrights Conference at the Alpine Playhouse from June 11 to 24, 2001. Their website is at: www.sevendevils.org.

Modeled after the famed National Playwrights Conference at the O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut, the Seven Devils Playwrights Conference will feature intensive workshops of four plays by professional playwrights and two plays by students from the McCall/ Donnelly High School Playwriting Class. Rehearsals and readings will be free and open to the public.

The professional playwrights selected to participate in this year's conference are: Dano Madden, Mary Lathrop, Bob Kerr, Ben Sahl and special Guest Playwright, Lee Blessing.

Dano Madden, a Boise native, has just completed a year's internship at Actors Theater of Louisville in Kentucky. His work on THE RACCOON at the conference will be mentored by renowned playwright Lee Blessing, whose productions on Broadway and in London have won him nominations for Tony and Olivier awards and for the Pulitzer prize. Playwright Mary Lathrop of Seattle, winner of the Richard Hugo House New Play Prize, will work on her black comedy THE URN OF DREW. Helen Merrill Award winner Bob Kerr, a Minneapolis native, will work on his comedy MEET UNCLE CASPER. Internationally-produced New York playwright Ben Sahl, will work on his farce JEWELS OF DENIAL.

The two student playwrights, selected from Judy Anderson's Playwriting Class to participate in the festival, will have the opportunity to rehearse and rewrite their plays along with the rest of the company, working with professional directors and mentored by the professional playwrights.

The conference is the product of a unique collaboration between the id Theatre Company of McCall and New York City; Quickly Bones Artists Collective of New York City, and McCall’s Alpine Playhouse.

The conference was created when Jeni Mahoney, a New York playwright/producer and alumna of the National Playwrights Conference, approached id founder Sheila McDevitt with the idea of bringing playwrights to McCall to work on new plays. When the Alpine Playhouse offered their enthusiastic support, the Seven Devils Playwrights Conference was born. Alpine Board Member Judy Anderson calls their sponsorship of the Conference, “a gift to the community and a part of our ongoing commitment to theater education.”

“With the id, the Alpine Playhouse, students, mentors, local talent, and visiting artists all working together - it’s going to be a very rich mix,” says Seven Devils’s Artistic Director Jeni Mahoney.
