RAT Response to Online Theater Comments

Folks,
Thought I would take some chunks of response and respond.

" I feel that theater is in part defined by the audience and performers
being able to breathe the same air at the same time. I'm not very
interested in watching somebody's
exploits online." <Allison Narver>

"It seems to me that what you're proposing is really TV storytelling, and
as people would get into it more, they'll start using TV vocabulary to
make it more communicative. <snip> I have a hard time envisioning your
concept other than as something similar to setting up a camera in one
corner of a party, resulting in something
unbelievably cold and distant." <Conrad>

-----------

Remember, among other things, I'm talking about bringing people into the
process of doing theater. They don't go to the theater; they don't attend
theater classes; they only had bad experiences with it in school.

When people are getting together to do live performances online, they can
think of it as a fun thing to do -- maybe as a part of a contest, or just
to share with friends. If it isn't a multiple camera thing, and if they
aren't doing multiple takes and there's no editing, well -- from *their
point of view* -- it really is theater.

In terms of established theater companies going online -- that certainly
has to wait for a bit better bandwidth and equipment to carry
simultaneous video and voice, but we really can't afford to be "elite"
about this. People will see your production and you may think it's flat
and cold, but people out there may be more interested in the content than
the overall impression. "Wow, someone is acting out a story about
something that interests me. Someone is taking this issue seriously."

Cheers,
Cat Hebert
