Re: RAT In support of in-home, in-class, on-line theater

Dear Cat-

I think I missed the beginning of the thread. Is the only
difference between what you're proposing and standard television, other
than professionalism, is that the camera is fixed? I dunno. The majority
of ensembles, at least in my experience, really resist sharing archive
videos, as they feel it really doesn't represent the work. I feel the same
way, although we do share ours. Whether that's better than nothing is an
open question, and probably dependent on the work. Since video samplers
have become almost a requirement in tour booking, we've had great
difficulty - the essence of our work just doesn't translate to that medium
- a very cold medium, unlike radio. It seems to me that what you're
proposing is really TV storytelling, and as people would get into it more,
they'll start using TV vocabulary to make it more communicative. Nothing
wrong with community-access TV, but it's a totally different medium.
There's a website that allows you a 24-hour live view of a Bourbon St.
corner in downtown New Orleans - kinda interesting for about a minute. I
have a hard time envisioning your concept other than as something similar
to setting up a camera in one corner of a party, resulting in something
unbelievably cold and distant. What am I missing?

Cheers-
Conrad
