Re: RAT How Many Cups of Each (was Marx in Soho (in LA))

To be honest with you, I don't see how you can separate these. Impact uses
emerging artists, often students. We give them a leg up and a little on the
job training. So number one, yes.

We are socially conscious and believe that all theatre (as all art/text) is
political. We are careful about the political content/messages/subtext of
our plays. Do rich white people come see our plays? Sure! We're not the SF
Opera or anything, but. They're there in small numbers. They give us some
money, too. Do they listen and pay attention? Maybe. There's actually no
way to tell whether the Ask Jeeves bigwigs who came to Impact Briefs 3 paid
attention to the piece about how much it sucks to be a temp, for example.
But let's pretend they at least thought about it on the way home. So OK,
number 2, yes.

Do young, fiery college students/artists come to see our plays/work with
Impact/write plays for us? Do we do plays about stuff? Sure! We all wanna
change the world. So. Number 3, yes.

So I'm beginning to lose track of where you think it's acceptable for me to
get my funding!

I think the time has come for us to examine the desire to categorize in this
way. What is the point of this type of demarcation? What do we hope to
accomplish? Why is it important to us to categorize theatre in these terms?
Because, honestly, it doesn't even enter my mind and I am having trouble
seeing a use for separating out and labeling "different" types theatre, an
art form that, by its nature, crosses boundaries and vexes categorization.

So what is really going on here? Are we just making categories so we can
congratulate ourselves for doing the "right" or "cool" kind of theatre?
