It's my experience with Impact that the theatre we do for our friends is 
exactly the same kind of theatre a whole bunch of other people in our 
"demographic" (interpret this how you will) want to see.  We started out by 
doing the kinds of plays that we wished we could see.  We are, five years 
later, still doing that, and we have a small but dedicated following, 
averaging 500 people per production (I think I already mentioned that).  
People like good theatre, people like fun theatre, and people like to see 
themselves and their concerns represented on stage.  When we resolved the 
lack of same for ourselves, we happily found that a whole buncha people were 
more than willing to come along for the ride.

I think what I'm trying to say is that there isn't such a huge difference 
between doing plays your friends want to see and doing plays people you never 
met want to see, given the caveat that your friends want to see good plays.  
And I'm guessing that they do.
