Re: RAT anyone know anything about montreal?

Ruthanne,

Welcome to the RAT list.

I spent some time in Montreal last year for personal, not professional, reasons. It's a fabulous city. Incredible. (As you probably already know.)

It's also not very good for English-language theater.

The English-speaking population in Montreal is about the size of a large town. So what you get in English-speaking theater is along the lines of what you'd expect in a large town. Not a city. So it shows kind of badly in the urban setting of Montreal.

Montreal has a theater fringe festival in June, which varies in quality year to year like all fringe festivals seem to. From what I've found out, they use a lot of temporary storefront or found-space kind of performance venues, because there are very few actual theater spaces available in Montreal.

There's also the national theater conservatory there; I believe they teach their students in both languages.

One bit of happy news: the Canadian Council recently devoted $500M (Can.) in new spending to the arts throughout the country. Some of that is bound to trickle down to Montreal.

Best of luck,
Megan

hello, all. new to the list. enjoying what i have
been reading so far. i have been trying out
conversations with my poor friends while trying to get
my sealegs for the discussion, so i should perhaps
jump in soon.

a question though: in august i will be moving from
dallas, texas (hotbed of revolution that it is) to
montreal, quebec (at least they speak a different
language and have had activists on the news...). i
was wondering if anyone know anything about theater in
montreal and had some directions they could steer me
in? any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.
