Re: RAT Marx in Soho (in LA)
It's an insanely tough issue. On the one hand: yes, absolutely, charge what the market will bear, we all
deserve the revenue, we work so hard that the diff between $12 and $20 will still never pay us
adequately. But: do we really want to reinforce the idea (which is already pretty much gospel out there)
that theater is for old rich people? And as far as the $50 for a concert ticket argument goes, let's be
real honest here: the kids who pay that kind of money know exactly what they're gonna get when they go
see the show--and they get it. We better teach them the value of a low-fi experience, teach it to them in
their bones, before we start charging that kind of price, because they will drop off like flies. And then
no one will see your damn play. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just nuts.
We're having to face this kind of thing right now at SVT. We're seriously looking at raising out standard
ticket price to $15, but if we do, we're still gonna cut at least $5 off that for students, plus offer
numerous pay what you can nights during a run. For us, it's unconscionable to do otherwise. To each
their own.
