Re: RAT live performance on the internet

Michael,

The problem with live performance on the Internet has to do with
bandwidth. What most people will get with streaming is what amounts to
snapshots plus somewhat jerky audio -- since it has to hop a number of
times and the end user's modem speed is likely to be "the weakest link".
There also has to be very fast connectivity on the sender end, since, if
you have hundreds of people accessing at a time you have to feed them
content. (Of course that can be handled through "ticketing")

There are lots of streaming systems available for high-bandwidth setups
(like universities, large corporations have). They are closer to
teleconferencing. HERE (NYC) and other groups have used this for
simultaneous performance.

What would be a good first step would be a national internet theatrical
performance network which at least records and encodes live performances
(with proper permissions, of course) and saves them online for download.

There are a couple of lower end possibilities that come to mind:
1. to combine lower-bandwidth video streaming with telephone
conferencing. This is a bit peculiar, and the sound isn't likely to be
great, and, unless an 800 number can be underwritten it would be pricey
for a longer piece, but....
2. Using lower-end personal teleconferencing -- like net-meeting, and/or
resurrect silent film techniques.

Cheers,
Cat Hebert
