    How can you have integrity and authenticity as a voice for deeper
values, like freedom, justice, and tranquil human relations, if you
share the same bottom line that gives us unjust societies in the first
place? I mean, of course, the conventional wisdom that the food chain
is hierarchal and that, above all, "You gotta eat." I just don't get
that, I always thought you waited until after the show to eat. First
things first, which means, The Work. That's what the money's all about
anyway, and you can't buy the heart that makes a good show--everyone
knows that. Total amateurs make a piece of theater happen in a church
basement or in someone's garage and blow people away who can't get off
to the same extent again at a whole string of professional shows they
pay 100 bucks to go to. It's weird but true--to get real about such
things is to admit, after all, that your stomach really does control
your heart, theatrically speaking, and that makes alternative theater,
or anything else posing outside the box, pretty hollow. It's like we're
really playing to the money guys, winking at the customers in the first
three rows at how cleverly we're conspiring to manipulate the populace
and the press. It's like saying we don't really mean it.
    My philosophy? From my own experience: Work on the heart, someone
will give you the lights--and make you scrambled eggs after your bows. 
    But I don't mean that Marx in Soho doesn't have heart and isn't
worth 18 bucks to anyone who has that kind of discretionary cash. I
just like quiet rat mona's attitude.
