There was a hyper-real German circus performance I remember from years ago in Stuttgart. (During the Rolf Hochhuth era, so anything was possible .... :)) Anyway, the clowns started off with slapstick and wound up (apparently) actually whacking each other for real. Funny at first, then planted audience members would get hurt and people began to get concerned. People grabbed their kids and left. "Why are you frightened of clowns, Emily?"

I also remember watching clown courses when they still had that curriculum at Florida State. Nothing sadder (or more melodramatic) than someone desperately trying to be funny and failing.
