Yes, encourage people to audition as long as you're really open about casting
them and have a venue that's accessible. The thing is, we're (Triumvirate Pi)
not interested in casting the disabled in roles "about" being disabled. Just
as a Person in a play need not automatically be assumed to be a White Person,
unless the role calls necessarily for certain kinds of physical activity, the
character need not automatically be assumed to be fully able bodied. In real
life, teachers, parents, insurance agents, editors, compter hackers etc.
sometimes use wheelchairs. So why not on-stage? We're not accustomed to
thinking that way, and there are complications because of theatre
architecture in theatres built or renovated prior to the Americans with
Disabilities Act. But it's worth thinking about and trying to remove
barriers. I didn't mean to put down efforts in Denver, but what I see so
often is as long as there's a ghettoized program somewhere (and this isn't
just about disability), the "mainstream" tends to think all needs are being
served.
