RAT oh my!

I am a little shocked that my simple question could cause such a stir!

I am looking for opinions from anyone involved with theatre. Instead of using reporter, I realize I should have used critic. I am exploring the role of the critic and the critic's relationship with the theatre company and the common public. Who is a critic trying to reach?  People highly involved with theatre or the general public. Do you make an effort to educate the general readers? Or do you just critic? How do you bring a balance? What is your first priority: the readers or the theatre?

Thank you for bringing to my attention the board. I will look into that.
