Ensemble Studio Theatre/Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
Science and Technology Project (Curt Dempster, Artistic
Director; Jamie Richards, Executive Producer; Chris
Smith, Program Director) are proud to present the New
York premiere of LOUIS SLOTIN SONATA by Paul Mullin and
directed by David Moore. Performances of LOUIS SLOTIN
SONATA begin Thursday, April 5 at 8:00 p.m. at Ensemble
Studio Theatre (549 West 52nd Street / 2nd Floor
Mainstage) with opening night scheduled for Monday,
April 9.

On Tuesday, May 21, 1946 Louis Slotin's hand slipped - a
small, practically insignificant blunder, except that
Slotin was the chief-bomb builder at Los Alamos - and at
that fateful moment he released a "prompt burst" of
radiation. With a structure inspired by classical
music's sonata allegro form, LOUIS SLOTIN SONATA traces
a brilliant scientist's last nine days, as his body and
mind deteriorate. Reliving the moment of his accident
again and again, Slotin makes his own unique way to
redemption.

The E.S.T./Sloan Project was created to commission,
develop and present new works for the theater exploring
the worlds of science and technology and to challenge
the stereotypes of scientists and engineers in the
popular imagination. It is part of the Alfred P. Sloan
Foundation's nationwide effort to support innovative
work in theater, film and television that helps bridge
the gap between the two cultures. Launched by Ensemble
Studio Theatre-the nation's pre-eminent developmental
theater company-with a three-year grant of over one- half
million dollars, the E.S.T./Sloan Project has
commissioned more than fifty artists, choreographers and
theater companies to date. The program's centerpiece is
FIRST LIGHT, a month-long Festival of New Works held in
April. The E.S.T./Sloan Project has presented several
special events to foster a dialogue between the
artistic, scientific and historical communities,
including "Creating Copenhagen," a symposium featuring
Michael Frayn and Michael Blakemore (playwright and
director of the Tony Award-winning Copenhagen) and Hans
Bethe and John Wheeler (Nobel Prize-winning scientists)
prior to the play's Broadway opening.

Playwright Paul Mullin is the son of a physicist. His
plays have been produced in cities across the country
including Seattle, Washington D.C., Louisville,
Baltimore, New York and Los Angeles, where he recently
received the L.A. Drama Critics Circle Ted Schmitt Award
for Outstanding World Premiere of a New Play.

Director David Moore makes his E.S.T. debut with LOUIS
SLOTIN SONATA. He has directed extensively in Los
Angeles, California, including Last of the Aztecs (Met
Theatre), Gatsby in Hollywood (L.A.T.C.), Cut, Poison and
Burn and Naked Holidays (Sacred Fools), and Five Women
Wearing the Same Dress (3,000 Miles Off-Broadway). His
recent film credits include Naked, Go Ahead, Dancing
Boy, and Hitting the Ground.

The cast of LOUIS SLOTIN SONATA includes Allyn Burrows,
Bill Cwikowski, Richmond Hoxie, Ezra Knight, Matthew
Lawler, Amy Love, Joel Rooks and William Salyers.

The design team for LOUIS SLOTIN SONATA includes Rachel
Hauck (sets), Greg MacPherson (lights), Amela Baksic
(costumes) and Robert Gould (sound).

ENSEMBLE STUDIO THEATRE, founded twenty-seven years ago
by Artistic Director Curt Dempster, is an "innovative
force in the theater" (The New York Times) having become
the most influential development theater in the United
States. Producing over 260 new plays, including the

Leslie Ayvazian, Christopher Durang, David Mamet, Marsha
Norman, Frank D. Gilroy and Tennessee Williams. E.S.T.
has grown from a core group of 20 to a membership of
over 400. E.S.T. is dedicated to preserving and
developing the resources of the professional theater by
